Coaching at a field with no signal

Most youth fields have one bar of signal on a good day. An app that needs a connection to take attendance or log a play is an app you stop using by October. Here is what should work offline, and what should not.

Ask any coach where their phone gets the worst signal, and they will name a field. The back practice field behind the middle school. The rec complex by the river. The gym with the concrete walls. The away field an hour north.

That is where coaching happens. So a coaching app has to work there.

What a coach actually does with no signal

Most of what a coach needs at practice is reading, plus a few quick writes:

  • Look at today's practice plan and the clock.
  • Check who said they were coming.
  • Take attendance.
  • Look up the depth chart, or which athletes are in which group.
  • On game day, log plays as they happen.
  • Post a quick note to the team after.

If any of those fails because the signal dropped, the coach goes back to paper. Then the paper has to be typed in later, which mostly does not happen.

What works offline in ProgramSlate

Once you have opened ProgramSlate on your phone with a connection, the things you need at the field keep working without one.

You can read the schedule, roster, practice plans, drills, playbook, depth chart, stats, team board and messages, as they were the last time your phone loaded them.

You can save, and it sends when you reconnect:

  • Attendance and RSVPs
  • Live game stats, including undo and delete, and the game recap
  • Team posts, comments and direct messages, shown as "Sending…" until they go

Offline changes reach the server in the order you made them. If two coaches take attendance on the same athlete, the later tap wins, even if the earlier one arrived second because that phone was offline longer. A strip under the header tells you how many changes are waiting.

What does not work offline, on purpose

Everything else is refused immediately, with a message saying it needs a connection. That includes editing the roster, creating events, sending invitations and changing sign-ups.

That sounds like a limitation, and it is one we chose. The alternative is accepting a change offline and finding out an hour later that it conflicted with something and quietly failed. A change that is refused now is better than one that is lost later.

What we never keep on the phone

Offline mode means some team data is saved on the device. We kept that as small as we could:

  • Guardian names, emails and phone numbers are removed before anything is saved.
  • Coach notes on athletes are removed too.
  • The saved copy belongs to the person signed in, is wiped when they sign out, and expires after seven days.

A lost phone should not be a lost roster of minors' contact details.

One habit that makes it work

Open ProgramSlate before you leave for practice, while you still have a signal. That loads today's plan, the roster and the RSVPs onto your phone. Then the field can have all the dead spots it wants.

Offline mode is part of every plan, including free teams. The FAQ has more detail.
